Winter? What Winter?

Ben and I were thanking our lucky stars we're in Texas this weekend! Perhaps it was the 80 degree weather when we know that throughout the rest of the country people are bundled up in parkas, perhaps we're just inspired by all the recent Super Bowl love, or maybe just maybe, Houston is growing on us. We're feeling rather proud after successfully hosting our first Airbnb guest last weekend. He was a ton of fun--a Patriots fan, and his enthusiasm about the game was contagious! Not gonna lie, I felt my first twinge of excitement about football and couldn't believe what was taking over me. After so much hulabaloo last weekend, and a crazy work week complete with filming and editing Youtube videos for hours on end, it was really nice to just chill out today and enjoy each other's company.

Ben y yo pasamos un fin delicioso; creo que finalmente nos sentimos en casa aqui en Houston. Quizá sean las temperaturas de 80 grados cuando sabemos que en el resto del país están haciendo muñecos de nieve, o a lo mejor nos inspiró todo el amor que ha recibido Houston ultimamente por el Super Bowl, o tal vez sea posible que ya nos estemos encariñando con esta ciudad.

El fin pasado hospedamos a nuestro primer invitado de Airbnb--un fanático de los Patriots, ¡y su entusiasmo por el juego nos contagió! A decir verdad, fue la primera vez en mi vida que el fútbol americano me genera algo más que ganas de comer y ver los comerciales. Después de tanto relajo el fin pasado, y una semana ocupadísima en el trabajo (incluyendo 6 horas sin parar de filmar y editar videos para YouTube), no tener plan alguno y pasarla de flojos disfrutándonos mutuamente fue una bendición.

Hand-me-downs formed an integral part of my childhood. Being the youngest of 5 with two older sisters gave me ample opportunities to score some twice-broken-in attire. The best was when my cousin Rachel would clean out her closet. Oh, getting those kitchen-sized white garbage bags filled to the brim was like Christmas for me. I’ll never forget that feeling. Pulling out entire matching outfits, trying on über cool jackets, running my hands along the softest of culottes, unable to imagine how profoundly having these clothes would impact my life. Wondering how in the WORLD she could be done with these already, and how was I lucky enough to be on the receiving end of it all?

It’s safe to say I haven’t received hand-me-downs in a while. So it was a pleasant surprise when my sweet suegra pulled these two suede gems that she used to rock in the 70’s out of her closet and told me they were mine to keep. It didn’t take much persuading.

La ropa de segunda mano formó una parte integral de mi niñez. Siendo la menor de 5 con 2 hermanas mayores, tuve muchas oportunidades para lucir prendas que ya habían sido amadas anteriormente. Lo mejor era cuando mi prima Rachel limpiaba su clóset. Recibir una de esas bolsas jumbo de cocina llenas hasta el tope era como la navidad para mi. Nunca olvidaré ese sentimiento. Metiendo la mano y sacando trajecitos perfectamente coordinados, apreciando la textura de shorts veraniegos, probándome chamarras de ensueño, y sintiendo de alguna manera que tener esta ropa definitivamente iba a cambiar mi vida, sin poderme imaginar cómo. Preguntándome cómo podía ser tan generosa y soltarme su ropa así nomás…

Cabe decir que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que alguien me ofrece ropa que ya no va a usar. Así que fue una sorpresa grata cuando mi suegra sacó estas dos faldas de gamusa que ella usaba en los 70’s y me dijo que me las podía llevar (tan linda, ella). No le costó trabajo convencerme.

Greetings from Bastrop!

Greetings from Bastrop, the self-proclaimed most historic small town in Texas!

Reading this quirky little sign got me thinking: If I had free reign over the category, what could I be the most of? It would be kind of like filling out a Mad Lib:

The _[superlative]_  _[adjective]_  _[noun]_  in _[region]_.

A few examples:

The most enthusiastic unpaid blogger in SouthWest Houston.

The most sporadic organized person at my house.

The most fashionable sudoku player in advertising.

That last one cannot be validated, I assure you.

Oh, also, meet Agustina, our precious ball of anxious curiosity. This was our first real road-trip with her and I'd say all in all it was a success story! Though we MUST learn how to keep her from tugging when she's on a leash! Any tips?

Saludos desde Bastrop, auto-proclamado como el pueblo pequeño más histórico de Texas.

Leer este letrero me puso a pensar: si yo tuviera control sobre la categoría, ¿en qué podría ser yo la más? Sería como llenar uno de esos Mad Libs:

Ejemplos:

La blogger no-pagada más entusiasmada del suroeste de Houston.

La persona organizada más esporádica en mi casa.

La chica Americana más Mexicana en todo el continente.

Ah, por cierto, les presento a Agustina, una bola de ansias y curiosidad con un corazonsote y una energía que no tiene límite. Este fue nuestro primer viaje con ella y lo considero todo un éxito (por aquello de que sobrevivimos). Aunque eso si, nos URGE aprender a controlarla mejor cuando trae la correa. Si alquien tiene un consejo, por favor, compártanlo en los comments.

Hue's it gonna be?

Lately I’ve been loving a monochromatic clothing color palette with little splashes of color here and there (my hair being one of the main contributors in the ‘splash of color’ department). It makes the whole morning matching game so much easier.

Once you’ve chosen a garment, you then have a very limited range of possible accompanying garments, and as you can imagine, it gives my getting-ready-time a substantial slice.

Note to self: Reorganize the closet so it is easier to navigate with one eye open (yeah, I’m NOT a morning person).

That, or start choosing my outfits at night, a la night-before-the-first-day-of-fifth-grade.

Ando fascinada con la onda de vestirme de un solo color, con pequeños detallitos que le dan vida y color a mi look (sobre todo ahorita con mi cabello, un “detallito” que me acompaña todos los días y definitivamente contribuye en el departamento del color).

Es increíble cómo facilita el juego de combinar prendas cada mañana. Una vez que hayas elegido una (ya sean pantalones, shorts, una falda, o un top), tienes un rango muy limitado de posibles acompañantes, y esto equivale a tiempo ahorrado (y una vida más productiva).

Nota a mi misma: Reorganiza el clóset para que sea mas fácil de navegar con un ojo cerrado (las mañanas y yo no nos llevamos muy bien).

Eso, o empezar a elegir mi outfit antes de dormir, tipo ‘noche antes del primer dia de clases’.

Playing dress-up

To me, dressing up for no particular reason at all is the ultimate celebration of being a woman. I say, why wait for “just the right occasion” to wear that fancy dress you’ve been itching to don, or those incredible stilettos that have been calling your name or that eccentric hat you bought while you were on vacation? The right occasion presents itself the moment you are in the mood for it to do so.

And that’s how I felt today. No need to justify or explain the white long flowy lacy dress, I wore it just for the heck-of-it, and it felt great!

Para mi, arreglarme y endomingarme cuando no tengo una razón en particular es una de las mejores maneras de celebrar que soy mujer. Asi como lo veo yo, ¿Para que esperar que sea “la ocasión perfecta” para ponerte ese vestido fancy que llama tu nombre desde el clóset, o esos tacones increíbles que tienes tantas ganas tienes de estrenar, o ese sombrero eccéntrico que te compraste cuando estabas de vacaciones? La ocasión perfecta se presenta el momento en el que tu quieras.

Y asi me sentí hoy. Sin la necesidad de justificar o explicar mi vestido de hada. Me lo puse porque se me antojó, y sabes que? Me encantó!
