DIY lavender hair

So now that I’ve been lavender on and off for about a year or so, I feel that I’m capable (if not qualified) to write a tutorial on how to obtain this coveted color. There have been periods of trial and error, but if I can’t learn from my mistakes and use them to help somebody else out, I am really not mastering this thing called life, am I? So, here in a nutshell, is an effective and fool-proof way to dye your platinum blonde hair lavender. If you are more into watching videos than reading and looking at pictures, I’ve got that covered as well. Enjoy! And remember, nobody decides what works for you except for YOU yourself.

Hace más de un año ya me teñí el cabello lavanda por primera vez. A estas alturas finalmente me siento capaz y quizá hasta capacitada para hacer un tutorial al respecto. Por supuesto que he pasado por periodos de ensayo y error, pero de eso se trata ¿no? Y si no puedo sacarles provecho a mis errores para ayudar a los demás, ¿como se supone que voy a avanzar en la vida? Asi que, aquí les presento, en resumen, los pasos para obtener cabello de color lavanda. Si te late mas ver videos que leer y ver fotos, no te preocupes, también pensé en ti. ¡Disfrútalo! Y recuerda, nadie decide lo que te queda bien mas que TU.

1. For best results, start with the lightest possible platinum blonde hair (you'd best let a professional do this) / Para los mejores resultados, empieza con cabello decolorado (este paso es mejor dejárselo a un profesional)

2. What you'll need: latex gloves, conditioner, semi-permanent hair dye, mixing bowl and brush, hair clips, and a brush / Lo que vas a necesitar: guantes de latex, acondicionador, tinte de pelo semi-permanente, recipiente y brocha para mezclar, clips, y cepillo

3. Three dyes that I recommend: Ion color brilliance in rose, Ion color brilliance in lavender, and pravana chromasilk in violet / Tres tintes que recomiendo: Ion color brilliance en rose, Ion color brilliance en lavender, y pravana chromasilk en violet

4. Lightly tint your conditioner (the pink is mostly to keep the blues at bay) / Tiñe tu acondicionador ligeramente (el rosado es para evitar tonos azules)

5. Mix well / Mezcla bien

6. Section off you hair and start from the neck up / Separa tu cabello en secciones y empieza a pintar de la nuca para arriba

7. It doesn't have to be perfect, but try to make it as even as you can / No tiene que ser perfecto, pero trata de distribuirlo lo mejor que puedas

8. Saturate your whole head with the mixture / Satura todo tu cabello con la mezcla

9. Put all your hair on top of your head and wait 30 to 45 minutes / hazte un chongo y espera de 30 a 45 minutos

10. Get in the shower and shampoo and condition your hair / Métete a la regadera, y lávate el cabello con shampoo y acondicionador

11. Feel like a mermaid! / ¡Siéntete como una sirenita!

One dress three ways

Not sure if it’s the unique print, or the unexpected versatility that I like most about this dress, but I am pretty sure not being able to pick a favorite quality is a quality in and of itself.

Somewhere amid the sweltering heat with refreshingly sudden bursts of rain that have made up this week, I found the inspiration for this post: three distinct ways to style this Topshop dress. I made white MVP in all of the looks because it screams puffy clouds, vanilla ice-cream and sea foam to me. Summer in full force.

No se si será el estampado tan llamativo y original, o la versatilidad inesperada lo que más me gusta de este vestido, pero creo que no poder elegir una cualidad favorita es una cualidad en si.

En algún momento entre el calor agobiante y las lluvias tan refrescantemente repentinas que nos han acompañado esta semana, logré encontrar inspiración para este post: tres maneras distintas de lucir este vestido de Topshop. Me aseguré de que en todos los looks el blanco fuera protagonista porque me hace pensar en nubes de algodón, helado de vainilla, y espuma de mar. ¡El verano a todo lo que da!

Spring in Houston

I am absolutely ecstatic about the official commencement of spring, and not at all intimidated by this horrendously humid and hot Houston summer everyone keeps warning me about. Yes, ideally it would always be 75 degrees with a slight breeze coming from the northwest, but you can’t have it all. I’d much rather sweat than freeze (Years of playing 'would you rather' with my siblings made me really good at determining the least detestable or more tolerable of two evils).

Today, thanks to Mr. Sun’s decision to show his beautiful face, I was able to leave my parka at home. I sported silky basics offset by semi-grungy shorts and boots, and topped the look off with some international accessories. Oh yeah, thanks to some sneaky DIY in the shower techniques, my hair is once again teetering on the brink between platinum, lavender and gray. You can’t really put it in a box — just like me!

Estoy toda emocionada porque después de una larga espera, la primavera arrancó (bueno, eso dice mi calendario). Lo que más me gusta de la primavera es que es el antecedente del verano, y a pesar de todas las advertencias que he escuchado acerca de los veranos extremadamente calurosos e insoportablemente húmedos de Houston, ¡A MI NO ME ASUSTAN! Claro, lo ideal sería estar siempre a una temperatura de 75 grados con vientos frescos proviniendo del noroeste, pero no podemos tenerlo todo. Yo prefiero mil veces sudar que congelarme.

Hoy, gracias al Sr. Sol que decidió mostrar su cara, pude dejar mi chamarra de eskimal en casa. Me vestí con piezas básicas de seda haciendo contraste con shorts y botas mas locochones y accesorios internacionales. Ah, y gracias a mis técnicas secretas en la regadera, mi cabello una vez mas navega el territorio entre platino, gris y lila. No se puede encasillar en una sola categoría — ¡mas o menos como yo!

Hue's it gonna be?

Lately I’ve been loving a monochromatic clothing color palette with little splashes of color here and there (my hair being one of the main contributors in the ‘splash of color’ department). It makes the whole morning matching game so much easier.

Once you’ve chosen a garment, you then have a very limited range of possible accompanying garments, and as you can imagine, it gives my getting-ready-time a substantial slice.

Note to self: Reorganize the closet so it is easier to navigate with one eye open (yeah, I’m NOT a morning person).

That, or start choosing my outfits at night, a la night-before-the-first-day-of-fifth-grade.

Ando fascinada con la onda de vestirme de un solo color, con pequeños detallitos que le dan vida y color a mi look (sobre todo ahorita con mi cabello, un “detallito” que me acompaña todos los días y definitivamente contribuye en el departamento del color).

Es increíble cómo facilita el juego de combinar prendas cada mañana. Una vez que hayas elegido una (ya sean pantalones, shorts, una falda, o un top), tienes un rango muy limitado de posibles acompañantes, y esto equivale a tiempo ahorrado (y una vida más productiva).

Nota a mi misma: Reorganiza el clóset para que sea mas fácil de navegar con un ojo cerrado (las mañanas y yo no nos llevamos muy bien).

Eso, o empezar a elegir mi outfit antes de dormir, tipo ‘noche antes del primer dia de clases’.

Playing dress-up

To me, dressing up for no particular reason at all is the ultimate celebration of being a woman. I say, why wait for “just the right occasion” to wear that fancy dress you’ve been itching to don, or those incredible stilettos that have been calling your name or that eccentric hat you bought while you were on vacation? The right occasion presents itself the moment you are in the mood for it to do so.

And that’s how I felt today. No need to justify or explain the white long flowy lacy dress, I wore it just for the heck-of-it, and it felt great!

Para mi, arreglarme y endomingarme cuando no tengo una razón en particular es una de las mejores maneras de celebrar que soy mujer. Asi como lo veo yo, ¿Para que esperar que sea “la ocasión perfecta” para ponerte ese vestido fancy que llama tu nombre desde el clóset, o esos tacones increíbles que tienes tantas ganas tienes de estrenar, o ese sombrero eccéntrico que te compraste cuando estabas de vacaciones? La ocasión perfecta se presenta el momento en el que tu quieras.

Y asi me sentí hoy. Sin la necesidad de justificar o explicar mi vestido de hada. Me lo puse porque se me antojó, y sabes que? Me encantó!

The Shorts

No me gusta el favoritismo, y aunque a todas las prendas en mi clóset les tengo cierto cariño, tengo que decirlo: estos shorts son de mis preferidos.

No conozco otra pieza que le inyecte vida a un atuendo sin querer llevarse el show entero. A pesar de que sobresalen (Gracias a la textura de tapete y la combinación de colores), saben complementar perfectamente. Y me llueven tantas preguntas acerca de donde las conseguí que quisiera tener algo un poco mas interesante o exótico que decir (Oaxaca? Chiapas? Morocco? Tailandia? Ya me fui...!) que “Melrose”. Ahora que lo recuerdo, las compré hace mas de 2 años ya... Tengo que regresar para ver si esa tiendita todavía existe!

There is definitely a special place in my heart for all my clothes, and I’m not big on favoritism. With that said, I must admit: these have got to be my favorite shorts. I don’t know of another piece that injects zest into an outfit without wanting to steal the entire show. Despite the fact that they stand out (thanks to their rug-like texture and bold colors), they somehow manage to know how to complement perfectly. I get asked where I got them so often that I wish I had something more interesting or exotic to say (Oaxaca? Chiapas? Morocco? Thailand? Ok, that was out there!) than “Melrose”. Come to think of it, I haven’t been back to that store since the day I bought these over 2 years ago... Gotta go back to see if the place still exists!
